I first came to see Simon with an open mind (and a tiny bit of skepticism!), fully expecting to try this deep breathing and ice bath thing once, then be on my way. However, I'm now approaching my sixth session and I've no intention of stopping
I've always liked the idea of mindfulness, particularly as a tool to live in the moment, but I don't practice consistently and when I do, I struggle to empty my busy brain and reach a clear-headed state. For me, the deep breathing exercises that Simon puts us through are a fantastic tool to reach that state. Each week I'm amazed at how something as simple as controlled, deep breathing can create such calmness, yet also energize and aid physical performance (I get some funny looks when I practice this in the gym, but it works to hit those extra reps!).
The ice bath itself is the main event. Every week I feel trepidation about getting into freezing cold water (who wouldn't?!), but for me that fear is beaten by the excitement for the euphoric feeling that follows. I always feel amazing afterwards, the same way you feel after a really great workout - energized, but also calm and focused. Sometimes I carry that feeling for several days. I am up to 8 minutes in the ice now, and I'm just really looking forward to seeing where it goes.
Simon is a great guy and takes time to understand what his participants want to achieve and get out of each session. There is never any pressure, only encouragement and support. If you're curious about the Wim Hof method, I whole-heartedly recommend trying it, especially if you're a skeptic like me.
